Bukhara Indian Restaurant

Last Sunday we met up with an old friend for dinner. Because of our schedule, we only get to meet about once a year, so we were really looking forward to it. We chose our favourite Indian restaurant Bukhara for dinner, which was recommended by her years ago.

We have tried many Indian restaurants/ takeaways before, but nothing came close to how good the food is from Bukhara. It is so good that even Muslims will go there for meals. That more or less says it all about how authentic it is.

From top clockwise: Chilli Chutney, Yogurt & Mint Chutney, Onion Chutney,
apple sauce (or Lime Pickle??), possibly Mango chutney

We ordered some Papadoms with the Pickle Tray while waiting for the starters to arrive. Our friend recommended the green chutney (not very certain what it was), which wasn't on the menu last time we were there, and it was really good! I even had it with my curry to cool it down a bit (we never order anything milder than hot!). Their onion chutney is delicious as well.

For starters we've ordered Lamb Seekh Kebab, Chicken Samosa and Lamb Tikka. I am quite picky with lamb as I can't stand that strong 'odour', but they have processed/ marinated the meat so well that I had no problem at all with their lamb dishes. All their starters were fantastic and we could never fault them.

We would have gone for their Mixed Grill as well as we always did, but we could never finish our mains and we always ended up overeating, so this time we didn't order it. If you don't know what to order, go for the Mixed Grill (includes Chicken and Lamb Tikka, Lamb Chops, chicken and lamb seekh kebab) and Chicken Samosas, which should give you a good starter selection.

Fresh greasy naan, nice!

We ordered a Garlic Naan and 2 portions of Pilau rice to go with our 2 currys. Their currys are so full of flavours, and I'm not just talking about the spiciness, that you only need a little bit to go with the rice/ naan.

The Pilau Rice was really yummy. Apparently you are suppose to flavour your rice instead of just cooking it according to the package instructions. I'm glad that we could ask our friend for the secret of cooking perfect Pilau rice. Must try it soon! The naan was a bit disappointing not because it wasn't nice to eat, but we all thought that it has shrunk in size by quite a bit comparing to the last time we had it.

We ordered a Lahori Chicken and Chicken Korma. Lahori chicken has a tomato base with finely shredded ginger. It was our friend's favourite chicken curry from Bukhara, and it has become one of our must-order curry as well.

I was never a fan of Chicken Korma because it is sweet and I dislike raisins. This Chicken Korma however, is my favourite curry dish in Bukhara. It is nothing like the korma we know. It is savoury and full of flavours, and none of those dodgy raisins floating about.

The first time we ordered this korma, was for little Abby as we didn't want to order her a children meal. We specifically asked them to put no spices at all in the korma. When it arrived, it was as bland as we have asked for, but there was a lot of left overs. We didn't want to waste food but it was too mild for us, so we asked them to make it hot. Not sure whether it was because they were upset with our fussy requests, the korma arrived with all sorts of chili on top of it, yet it was the best korma we ever had! It was madly hot, but really tasty as well. I don't think the korma we ordered ever since then was as hot as that time, but they were still delicious.

The currys I'd definitely recommend is the two currys above, as well as Karahi Lamb (also recommended by our friend). We normally order the three currys for a takeaway and they can last us for two to three meals.

After you have visited them once, you can really tell that their curry are very different from outside. Our friend has pointed out that that was how homemade currys are like. Not only are they packed with flavours, they aren't as greasy either. You won't see puddles of oil surrounding their currys. I think that any Indian curry lovers must visit Bukhara.
