McAfee All Access 2012 Household Protection Review and Giveaway - CLOSED

McAfee All Access 2012, Parenting Control, McAfee anti-virus

Being a computer addict myself, I can't really blame my daughter for constantly wanting to go on my computer or phone. She loves to play CBeebies games, or when she's on my phone, she'll play a bit of this and that. It's good that she gets tired of it within half an hour or so!

One thing that worries me is the ease of access to the Internet. I once caught Abby watching Youtube videos of the talking cat app, and I was wondering how much of my 3G data plan she ate into, before I thought of the security issue. She now know that she shouldn't be on the Internet, but she occasionally clicked the wrong button (adverts in apps, for example) and she had to ask me to remove them because she didn't know how to. Although I have anti-virus installed on both my computer and phone, they were not providing protection for my children.

I was intrigued when McAfee's PR contacted me with their All Access protection. One software to protect your gadgets including computers (PC, laptop, MAC, netbooks), mobilephones (unfortunately not iOS nor Windows Phone) and tablets, from viruses, spyware, malware, etc, as well as providing parenting control, online backup storage, GPS tracking, etc. I decided to give it a try.

When the box arrived, I was surprised at how light it was. What era am I living in?! There was nothing but an instruction note and a subscription card to access the download from McAfee's website. According to hubby, that's how the packaging are like nowadays.

The download and installation was quite straight forward, although it did take some time to register that I was asking it to execute setup.exe. Also, do remember to enter +44 in front of your mobile number when prompt to do so. Don't forget the 'plus' sign.

Once finished, double click McAfee's icon on your desktop and you should see the general information page. You can change settings for each function. The above pictures shows how McAfee protects your child against the scary world out there. You should set up a new user on your computer for your children so that they won't be able to accidentally click on the wrong buttons, or visit the wrong websites. You can control what applications they can have access to, what sites they can visit, and how long they can stay online for using McAfee All Access. It's like having an anti-virus program that looks after the children's safety as well.

Same for smartphones, you can set up parenting control on your phone to limit your children's access to the Internet. Simply log onto your account through McAfee's website, and add a phone to your account. It will ask you to install McAfee All Access on your phone if you haven't already done so, and Family protection, both can be downloaded through the app store. Now I just need to make sure that I turn it on when I pass it to Abby to protect her from those dodgy websites.

As an all access protection software, parenting control is just one of the great functions McAfee provide. I'm not sure how well it runs as I rather not try to install viruses onto my computer to test the function, but everything seems to be running alright on the PC.

Although not tested properly (again, I'm not installing virus and threads just to proof to you that it's working), I already love whatever I see on my phone. Once registered, you'll get an ID and PIN that allows you to remotely control your phone, by locking, wiping data, and tracking (if the GPS stays on). It's just like in the movies!

Through the main screen of the All Access app, you can check what each app you have downloaded, or are going to download, access from your phone. For example:

I installed a new app (you can see from the top McAfee was scanning the app after it has been downloaded onto the phone), and McAfee told me that the app hasn't been checked for using risky sites, and it could access and send personal data from my device. It is then up to you whether you want to trust the app or remove it.

You can choose to filter calls and texts by allowing or blocking some contacts, which is extremely helpful for me because I realised that my mobile phone number has been sold by a company called DLG to some finance companies. I have been getting all sorts of texts and phone calls and this is the perfect place to block them from texting or calling again!

You can do more by setting up device admin, but I didn't like the Erase All Data bit where it can do a factory reset without a warning, so I didn't set it up. I'll switch on my GPS and lock my phone with the additional McAfee pin lock to make sure that if my phone is stolen, it is not accessible within a short time. And I can then track it through remote access, or give up and wipe my phone clean.

So far I'm really liking the McAfee All Access 2012, it's not just an anti-virus anti-spyware software, which I had to download each separately, and once on my phone. It provides so much more, and I love to know that it's protecting my phone with all those functions.

Be aware that McAfee All Access doesn't cover iOS and Windows Phone as I have said above, although you can go on their website and find the suitable product that does. Unfortunately their Parenting Control and Website Ratings doesn't apply to Symbian nor Blackberry either. Other than that it is a great software to own. The Individual protection can be bought from PC World  for £23, while the household protection that covers up to 5 users is £44.99, both are 12 months subscription.

If you like to try McAfee All Access 2012 yourself, then you should enter the following Rafflecopter giveaway for a chance to win one of the two Household Protection!
