Badge It! Badge Maker

Abby loves craft kits, but they tend to get messy (paint, glitter, little pieces, etc) and go all over the place, which I'm not keen in. However, the Badge It! badge maker Bandai sent us for review was really neat and she hardly needed my help with them. And then there is the fact that it's not limited to children use either!

Badge It! was originally launched in 2003 and has won Creative Toy of the Year award. It was a big seller and has been reintroduced after a big demand for it to come back. The original maker was opaque, but I love the new version where you can see how the mechanism works. It helped answering the unlimited "Why"s and "How"s!

Badge It! badge maker comes in 2 colours (blue or purple as far as I know), and the box includes the fully assembled badge maker (previous version required some assembly), 15 metal badges set (front and back metal parts, pin backing, plastic cover and designs) and a template to mark the badge area for you to make your own design.

Abby couldn't wait to get her hands on the machine, although she does seem to struggle a bit (don't forget however, that Badge It! is suitable for 6 years+, and Abby is only 5) when turning the knob to it's final mark. A bit of help and she made her own badge without the mess I dread! Do make sure that no dirt comes between the design and the plastic film though!

The designs included are colourful and quirky, but I wanted to try out the template, so I found a Hello Kitty sticker and a piece of paper for the trial run. I would love to try using fabric and card making kits to make fashionable badges next, so I can wear or accessorise my accessories (bags, pencil cases, perhaps stick it on cards, etc) with them!

The badge maker is really easy to use, step 1 is to use the machine to wrap the front metal part with the design and film. While the machine holds on to the front of the badge, step 2 is to press the front on to the back metal part. If you don't turn the knob enough (until it hits the marker, then further until it clicks) the front and back will come apart though, so you might need to give the younger ones a hand to turn the last bit to make them hold. Last step is to attach the pin to the badge. Really simple and mess free!

Another thing I love about the gadget (it's really a craft gadget, not quite a toy!) is that you can buy refills! A lot of craft kits doesn't provide refills or they are hard to source, so this is definitely a bonus, to make the kit last!

So far we've only managed to make a few, but am sure there are more to come this weekend! The badge maker is retailed at £19.99 and for rrp £8.99 you can buy their refill pack that contains 30 badge sets, available now at all good toy stores (and possibly craft stores too!).
