The Zelfs Venus Flytrap Spin Salon

The Zelfs, Zelfs play set, new troll dolls

I remember back in the 90s, troll dolls were quite popular, and some of my friends used to collect them as well. Like some of the 80s classic toys, they have slowly disappeared into the background, being shadowed by other new toys, and although they are still around, it's much harder to find them now.

Recently we were given the opportunity to review one of Character Options' new toy from The Zelfs range - The Zelfs Venus Flytrap Spin Salon (rrp £19.99). It was the first time we were introduced to The Zelfs, and I realised how much they resemble the troll dolls, only much cuter and colourful of course!

Like the troll dolls, The Zelfs comes in various sizes and style, with limited additions and ultra rare ones as well to collect. Each of them represents something, for example, the medium sized Zelf Pegasue (rrp £5.99) we were sent as well represents A+ fortune, and comes with a horseshoe charm. She's even got wings like a Pegasus!

Apart from the dolls that you can collect, they also include play sets in the range, like the Venus Flytrap Spin Salon we were sent. The flytrap salon comes with an exclusive medium sized Flytrap Zelf Tressa, a tiara, hair clips and a brush, which can be hung on the salon's shelf. The salon itself has a drawer unit with 2 removable drawers, a mirror, spinning chair and a flytrap clip, and it can be closed for storage.

The salon doesn't require any batteries to work. Simply clip the Zelf's hair into the flytrap's mouth (it can be opened and closed), sit the Zelf on the spinning chair, and press the button to spin the zelf around. The idea is that the hair will be twisted into a new hairstyle.

Both me and Abby really love the idea of the spinning chair and twisted hair style, unfortunately both of us couldn't get it working properly. It's a bit tricky to clasp all the tip of the hair into the flytrap's mouth, and when we managed to get the position right, the chair doesn't quite spin for more than 2 rounds, and it started to get stuck. The Zelf's hair didn't get twisted as shown on the box, and straighten itself out once removed from the flytrap.

Even so, it didn't put Abby off at all from playing with it. In fact she just told me that she can twist the hair herself, and pretend that the Zelf is having her hair done instead of really using the chair for it. I like her positivity, not only did she not give up on the toy, she continued playing with it using her imagination. In fact, I think she enjoyed twisting the Zelf's hair herself more than using the chair!

I think children care less than us whether a toy worked as described or not. As long as they love the Zelfs, the play set will make a lovely addition to their imagination play. And Clay loves pressing the button just to see the chair spin so that's a bonus too!

The Zelfs Venus Flytrap Spin Salon can be bought from Character Options' online store as well as any good toy stores, and the range is suitable for 5 years old and above.
