Snowflake the White Gorilla DVD

We've seen quite a few Hollywood-made live-action/ animated comedy films for family, but this is the first time we saw one that's made in Spain - Snowflake the White Gorilla

The story:

Snowflake is a rare white gorilla, captured from her home in Guinea and sent to the Barcelona Zoo in Spain to live, where she became the most popular attraction. Although the people love her, the alpha male gorilla in the enclosure didn't as she was too different and "abnormal" from the rest of them. When Snowflake heard that there is a powerful witch living in the city, she decided to pay her a visit, hoping that the witch can help her change her fate by turning her into a normal gorilla.

Together with her new friend Ailur the red panda who believes that he's an incarnation of a Buddhist black panther, and her best friend Paula, a bright little girl who looked after her for months before she was sent to the zoo, they ventured out to find the witch while being hunted down by an evil wizard, who's after Snowflake's beating heart for his immortality spell.

The movie was funny to watch and both Abby and Clay enjoyed it very much until the bit where the evil wizard captured Snowflake, when they were a bit scared! However, any good show should have an unfortunate villain, just like any Circus requires a funny clown! At the end it was all happily ever after, and Abby said that she still liked the show, even though it was a bit scary! It's a great show to watch together with the children, and it teaches them that being different is good.

While doing a research for this review (the things you don't see behind a review), I realised that this was actually based on some facts of a true story! According to Wiki, in 1966 a male white albino gorilla (the only one known so far) was captured and was sold to Spain, eventually kept in the Barcelona zoo for around 37 years. The white albino gorilla was given different names, but more widely known as Snowflake. He was so popular that he became the unofficial mascot of the city. He passed away in 2003, but has lived longer than an average gorilla living in the wild.

Although it's unrelated, I always like to know the true stories that inspires movies, especially those that we enjoyed watching. As the movie is filmed in Spanish, it's been voice casted in English by stars including David Spade (I remember him from 8 Simple Rules, the funny yet caring cousin!), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future Emmett "Doc" Brown, Uncle Fester from The Addams Family) and Janette McCurdy (Sam Pucket from Nickelodeon's iCarly). The DVD also includes subtitles, which is fab for me as I'm too used to subtitles!

Snowflake the White Gorilla DVD will be out on Monday 7th October 2013, and is available for pre-order now on Amazon UK.
