Spinningfields Snow Season Outdoor Ice Rink

Manchester Spinningfields Outdoor Ice Rink, Skating with Santa, Christmas ice rink

Last week I mentioned about making this year's Christmas special, and so we did! We started another Christmassy weekend last Saturday (more about this later), and on Sunday we joint Santa and many others ice skating at Spinningfields' outdoor ice rink!

We meant to arrive earlier but with some delay we only managed to arrive just on time. Santa was already skating around with people when we queued up for the cloak room (£1) and skates. So we thought we'll just enjoy the skating and if we get a chance we'll have a chat with him (and Abby certainly did!)

There is plenty of space to sit down in the skate changing area, though you might wanna keep an eye on the floor after you've exchanged your shoes for skates as you'll be walking around in socks while others in skates. I do believe that this applies to all ice rinks as I've seen another ice rink's picture that has the same system.

Initially we had some doubts about ice skating, as hubby and Abby had never ice skated before (though hubby used to roller blade every weekend with his friends), Clay is not quite 3 yet, and I have balancing issues. But we had a lot of fun during our skating session, especially Abby! She's a daring little girl and skating around the edge of the ice rink (with me) is just not good enough for her! She managed to grab a penguin to help her skate off the edge, and had great fun when hubby took over. He realised that, if you know how to roller blade, you'd know how to ice skate, and he skated away effortlessly *grumble*

We did had some problem with Clay as he couldn't hold onto the ice rink edge to skate, and he refused to sit on the seal, otherwise we all could have enjoyed ourselves (I would have held on to the seal!) instead of needing to take turn to look after him. I do feel sorry for him though, if only if he wasn't so clingy at that time! The really friendly staff have been ever so kind and tried to cheer him up, which was really nice. A security staff on the ice rink also went to check on Abby, making sure she was okay after being crashed into by someone having too much fun!

Overall, ice skating outdoors (such a big difference than indoors! Would have loved to do it at night under all the Christmas lights!) at Spinningfields has been a fantastic experience, and we will certainly come back again (after some practising)! By next year, Clay would be closer to 4, so hopefully he will be enjoying himself a bit more then!
