Curvy Body Type
If you’re curvy, the best way to go about buying a dress to match your body type is to embrace your curves. You should look for semi fitted styles of dress that softly follow your curves and accentuate your waistline, such as a wrap dress – a firm favorite with Beyonce. Sheaths, belted shirt dresses, and full skirts are also excellent choices of garment for ladies with a curvy body type.
If you’re larger up top, you’ll want to look for styles that balance out your shape. Avoid boat neck styles, off the shoulder tops and dresses or high necklines, and instead opt for dresses with a semi fitted shape that have nipped in waists and open necklines. Wrap dresses, shirt dresses and shift dresses with a wide or V neckline are a good option for ladies with a fuller bust.
If you’ve got a smaller bust, you should opt for styles of dress that will accentuate your chest and make you look a bit bigger up top. Ruffles and shirring over the bust will help to create an illusion of fullness, however it’s important to avoid anything that has built in boning or darts if you’re not able to fill them out. Strapless dresses, shirt dresses and empire necklines are all excellent choices for adding some definition to the bust.
If you’re quite short and petite, you will want to opt for simple silhouettes that will accentuate your petite figure without being too overwhelming. Fitted sheath, wrap, shirt and empire style dresses all work well on the shorter figure, and you should avoid outfits that have too much embellishment or full skirts. Choose items that have vertical details such as a chevron maxi dress to help elongate your figure.
If you have a straight, slim and boyish figure, you are best opting for belted dress styles such as a belted shirt dress in order to add curves to your figure. Anything that is gathered at the waistline will add curves to your shape. If you’re not overly concerned with adding curves, shift dresses and A-line styles are equally stylish options. You should avoid tank dresses and any styles that are too voluminous.
