Nintendo 3DS: Kirby - Planet Robobot

Nintendo 3DS Kirby, Kirby Planet Robobot, Nintendo 3DS Platform game

Did you see the E3 news? Nintendo has announced several really cool games that we'll be looking forward to play! I think they have been doing an amazing job with developing new games, not only are the graphics and sound amazing, but you can also see a lot of game play improvements, making games even more fun to play (the new Legend of Zelda game alone has taken my breath away!).

Take the recent Nintendo 3DS Kirby: Planet Robobot for example, which included some great game play from their previous games such as Yoshi's Woolly World (the first time when we encountered it anyway), turning a usual 2D platform game into 3D (alternate play in fore- and backgrounds!), and making collecting special items part of the main game play instead of just bonus fun.

I haven't managed to go far into the game, but I had so much fun playing it! Last night I showed hubby a really awesome stage where Kirby gets to fly a jet and shoot at enemies, just like how you would in retro flying and shooting games, and it brought back so much memories! I normally don't play a stage again, but I did for this stage because I loved it so much!

Nintendo 3DS Kirby: Planet Robobot is a really adorable game with lots of cute and funny features implemented in it. Take a look at what we've played so far and you'll know what I mean. I was also glad to be able to take screenshots using Miiverse, so you can see the actual graphics too.

Nintendo 3DS Kirby: Planet Robobot (pegi 7; RRP £34.99, bundle option available) is a 1 to 4 player platform game, where players play as Kirby on Planet Popstar. The planet is invaded by Haltmann Works Company and its robotic army, turning it into a monstrous mechanical mess. It is down to Kirby to put a stop to it, using Kirby's trademark Copy abilities, and turn their own technology against them by taking control of the powerful Robobot Armour.

The game also comes with 2 mini games, and another to be unlocked later on.

Save and Load:

There are 3 data files available for players to save their game, but self saving is not available. As all platform games, players will start the game in the world map every time they log in, or restart at the previously auto-saved area inside the stage during play.

Game Mode:

Players start with 3 Game Modes: Story, Kirby 3D Rumble and Team Kirby Clash. Judging from the look of the screen, there should be another game mode to unlock and perhaps 2 more options to add to the bottom?

We'll focus on the main Story Mode and come back to the mini games later.

World Map:

Players will start the game in the world map, with Kirby standing in front of the Area they last played in. From there (and Area map as well) they can check the Stickers and Code Cubes collection. Code Cubes are required to unlock the Area Boss stage, and it will also unlock a bonus stage 6, which is playable with scenes from each of stage 1 to 4 from that Area.

Tutorial:

The game uses typical controls for basic moves, but there are also tutorials appearing where a new skill is required.

A thing worth noting is that Kirby doesn't just move on a 2D platform. Kirby will get to move to the background at times, giving the game a lot more depth even in 2D graphics (it's even more cool in 3D graphics on the new Nintendo 3DS and new Nintendo 3DS XL!).

Attack:

Kirby has a Copy ability, where he can inhale enemies, swallow them (oppose to using them as ammo by shooting them out) and copy the enemy's attack ability. There are over 25 abilities that Kirby can copy and use against his enemies.

Kirby can also use enemies' Robotic Armour (he look so "bada**" in that armour! Please mind my language, that's the only word that came to mind when I saw him in the armour!), and enhance it by scanning enemies' abilities as well. This also allow Robotic Armoured Kirby to turn into a car or a jet, which provides a different level of platform game fun!

Items:

Food - Kirby needs different kind of food (mainly sweets and puddings!) to help him recover his health during his adventure. They aren't readily available so playing smart is the key!

Sometimes Bandana Waddle Dee will give Kirby special food stored in a star that he can keep for later use as well, which can be changed to something even more useful through Streetpass or other means.

Code Cube - These are required to unlock the Area Boss stage as well as the EX stage (bonus stage). It is the first time I see a collectible actually being used in a game other than for bonuses. Some are easy to find, while others will require players to play the stage again to try to get it.

Stickers - I believe that these are just for collecting, I'm not sure if you'll get something special if you complete your collection though (we never managed to complete a collection!).

Bosses:

There are mini bosses in each stage, which Kirby can inhale and have their ability copied as well, after defeating them. Some can be quite tricky to defeat! But most of the time, like Abby said, you can use their skill to attack them (such as inhaling what they use to attack you, and either swallow it to copy the ability, or use it as your own ammo).

Once unlocked, players will get a chance to equip Kirby in stage 5, before they meet the Area boss.

Stage Cleared Bonus:

At the end of each stage, players can launch Kirby through a colourful tunnel for bonus points. Kirby will cheer when you get him furthest, or give you an unimpressed expression when you launched him to the first cloud!

Really funny moments:

Although I can't really call them Easter Eggs, because I think Easter Eggs are suppose to be more hidden? But they gave me the same amusements! Like the Q-bert looking enemy, or a stage of fly and shoot just like in the good old retro game. The enemies are absolutely adorable as well and will sometimes do really funny things to make you giggle or raise your eyebrow!

Mini Games:

The game started with 2 mini games available, where one allows you to play in a team with up to 3 other players to defeat bosses, and the other let you defeat as many enemies within the shortest time possible. There should be one more mini game for you to unlock later on as well.

I didn't try out the team game, although it'll be fun playing with others defeating bosses. I did enjoy the Kirby 3D Rumble, but I prefer the story mode more.

amiibo:

The new Kirby - Planet Robobot comes with new amiibo figurines, including the adorable Kirby sitting on a star, Waddle Dee, and a few special edition ones! All new Kirby amiibo can give Kirby special abilities, and some other amiibo figurines will give Kirby other abilities as well, such as Mario amiibo will give Kirby the Fire ability. So it's worth trying other amiibo with the game as well.

Sound and Graphics:

Kirby: Planet Robobot's soundtrack is generally exciting and fun. I absolutely adore the 3D graphics. Each stage has a special theme (Casino, in a moving train, etc) and all graphics I've seen so far are full of details. As Kirby can jump from foreground to background, there is a lot of details needed for both, and everything in the back are made smaller too, so I'm definitely impressed.

Overall, I think that Kirby: Planet Robobot is really cute, while the game design is quite clever. It is obvious that Nintendo has put in a lot more technical details and skills to create this new style of platform game, instead of creating just another 2D platform game with enhanced graphics. It's definitely going to please children and adults alike!
