Next few Christmas gifts we would like to recommend are brilliant for kids who love science! First up is Brainstorm Toys' 2 in 1 Globe - Earth & Constellations, which has won Toy Shop UK 2013 Independent Toy Awards!

Initially we thought that the constellations were painted on the globe with glow in the dark chemical, but this is even better!

The 2 in 1 Globe (RRP £35.99, suitable for age 8+) shows a 22.8cm world map with geographic features (longitude and altitude for example), and at night in a dark room, the light sensor automatically turns the globe on (when you have pressed the on button. Requires 4 x C batteries), transforming it into a constellation map.

Glow in the dark paint isn't going to get you this effect! Look at how beautiful the globe is at night! And you don't have to worry about it fading either (it switches off during the day or when you physically press the off button), you can sit there all night discovering the constellations, in gorgeous colours too!

The kids are absolutely fascinated by the 2 in 1 Globe. They can finally see how our planet is like, which is actually tilted in an angle! They found the countries where their grandparents live, and see where we are on the map.

We were also Ooo-ing and ahhh-ing at the glowing constellation map. It is the kids' first time knowing what their horoscopes are. We also giggled at Ursa Minor and Major, which has been mentioned in one of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic episode. It wasn't made up after all! We are used to the constellation's Latin names, so it is nice to find out what their English names are as well.

Having a globe instead of a flat map was once on my wish list, and it has now come true, thanks to Abby's interest! We did have a glow in the dark map, but a globe is so much fancier, and it is also much easier to explain a lot of things to the curious kids. We (not just the kids!) will certainly benefit a lot from it for years!

Brainstorm Toys also have a 2 in 1 Glove - Earth by Day and Earth by Night, but we especially love this one because of the constellations. We think that the globe will make a great gift for someone interested in our planet and astrology!
