Nintendo 3DS: Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

We've reviewed Yoshi's Woolly World on Nintendo Wii U a while back, and we really love how cute the game is. The kids absolutely adored Poochy, and have been fighting over the Poochy Power Badge every time they played the game (only one player can have Poochy as their sidekick). So when we heard that Nintendo was launching the new Yoshi's Woolly World on Nintendo 3DS, with Poochy taking on a bigger role in the game, we couldn't wait to try it out, and we finally got it!

We've been trying out the new Nintendo 3DS Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World for a couple of weeks now, and although the kids really like the game, especially the adorable Poochy Pups and Poochy's mini games, they do miss the Wii U Yoshi's Woolly World 2-player mode, even though they fought a lot while playing (it requires teamwork as well as having to fight over Poochy). For me, because I'm always busy, the Mellow Mode in the new Nintendo 3DS Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World where I can get Poochy Pups' assistance is perfect as I can just play through the stages while relaxing at the same time, and I don't have to be tied down to the TV either (although this will change when the new Nintendo Switch is out!).

I do think that the Nintendo 3DS version is perfect for younger children because of the optional help from the Poochy Pups. It takes away the stress of running out of yarn balls for example, allowing them to focus on exploring and thinking about their next step.

Older children can still enjoy a challenge by going for the Classic Mode.

Here's a breakdown of what you can expect from the new Nintendo 3DS Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World:

In Nintendo 3DS Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World (pegi 3, RRP £34.99 with a sticker sheet and A2 poster or £44.99 with Yarn Poochy amiibo from the official Nintendo UK store), players are playing as Yarn Yoshi on Craft Island, and they have to rescue other Yarn Yoshis from Kamek, who has turned most of them into Wonder Wools and took them away.

On the Title Menu, before you choose a file and enter to world, you can watch a video clip through the Yoshi Theatre and answer a question. If you get it right, you'll get a nice amount of bonus beads (currency in the game for trading Power Badges) to start your game. New videos will unlock in time after you've watched the previous one.

To enter the game, players can choose the colour of their starting Yoshi by choosing one of the 3 available files (green, pink or blue). This allows me, Abby and Clay to have our own game each too.

The game saves automatically at checkpoints, which players will appear at when their Yoshi died during a stage. But you will always start the game at the Main Menu, which, if you have played the Wii U Yoshi's Woolly World, looks like a big town with huts around a Big Yarn Ball. For the Nintendo 3DS version, the town is featured in a single line, with the Big Yarn Ball in the middle of it.

Players have a choice of 2 game settings, where buttons on the Nintendo 3DS family handheld system will be used for different moves. Players can also change their throwing speed, and change the mode they are playing in (Mellow of Classic) any time they want.

There are a few support options to help players get through the game. You can either use beads to buy Power Badges every time you start a stage, use an amiibo to call for an extra Yoshi to help (it shadows your moves, so you can do double attack. You can even gobble it up and throw it at bad guys!), or if you are in Mellow Mode, call for Poochy Pups to help.

Poochy Pups are extremely helpful as they act as yarn balls, and you'll get unlimited of throws as the Poochy Pups will always come back to you. They will also seek out secrets/ points of interest, which helps you with your collection (see below). They will even initiate attack to clear your path! Have I mentioned how cute they are as well and make the adventure even more fun?

During your adventure, there are a few items you can collect. If you collect all 5 Wonder Wools for each stage, you will rescue one of the Yarn Yoshi Kamek kidnapped, which will be added to your Reknitted Yoshi collection. You can then select them to continue your adventure.

To see all the Yarn Yoshi you've rescued, simply visit the Yoshi Hut from the town (the Big Yarn Ball area).

What's new that Wii U Yoshi Woolly World doesn't have is the feature where you can create your own Yarn Yoshi pattern! I did a plain colour one, but you can also use the Draw option to draw patterns, such as a X on the belly button! You can then save and share your pattern, and even use it to go on your adventure!

Apart from the Wonder Wools, you'll also be collecting other items including Smiley Flowers. If you've collected every single flower in that World, you'll unlock a bonus level. We are 7 short for the first World!

Another thing to collect is Pencil Patches, which will unlock patterns you can use to design your own Yoshis.

If you are tired from your Yoshi adventure, you can visit the Poochy Hut and have fun running and jumping as Poochy (he looks so happy!)! You'll be collecting beads, which can be used for your Power Badges as well.

As mentioned before, you can use Nintendo amiibo characters to help you in the game. But you can also use the amiibo characters to collect new patterns, which will be shown in the amiibo hut.

With the launch of the new Nintendo 3DS Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World comes a new Poochy amiibo, which when tapped in, will accompany Yoshi during his adventures. You can also scan him during a Poochy Dash course (Poochy Hut) to unlock new Time Attack missions. And after you've completed all the missions, you'll be able to unlock new Poochy designs too.

All previous Yoshi's Woolly World amiibo characters are compatible with the game, as well as those from the Animal Crossing and Splattoon amiibo collection.

To see what enemies you've encountered, access Yoshi Theatre without leaving the game, and listen to the soundtrack, simply visit the Scrapbook Theatre.

At the end of the town is the launcher that will throw your Yoshi into the World to start your adventure.

Although there is no dialog, the game is still very cheerful and funny! I still remember when the kids first discovered that they can gobble each other up and throw them at enemies, how they shrieked with laughter! Although the new Nintendo 3DS Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World is a single player game, you can still gobble your amiibo helper up and do the same!

Another thing I spotted a couple of days ago was the watermelon! I accidentally ate a watermellon and started spitting watermelon seeds out! It was hilarious, and at the end of the stage I even collected a Watermelon Yoshi (I think that's his name)! It makes me really look forward to playing the game further and see what else other fun things there are!

I didn't pay attention, but I've entered a bonus area in a few stages now, where my Yoshi will turn into something else (Mega Yoshi, for example) to help me collect as many beads as I can within 30 seconds. There are little clocks you should collect as well to add bonus time to your time limit.

With games like this, there bound to be a Boss stage. In the first World we have encounted 2 bosses, one half way through, the other at the last stage. They are both super cute! I must admit that I had no idea how to defeat them (I know how to stay alive though!), and had help from both kids, telling me what to do ("lick his tummy!") . Again, I had Poochy Pup's help, so I didn't need to collect yarn balls by dealing with the enemies the bosses launched at me, otherwise I think it's quite fun with a good challenge!

Overall, we really adore the new Nintendo 3DS Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. The Craft World is super cute, very colourful with cheerful soundtrack. Enemies are cute and the Poochy Pups made the adventure even more fun (they flip and wuffs!). I love it that Nintendo made the game difficulty very flexible, so that it's a game that is actually suitable for 3 years and above.

If you are thinking of buying the game, I'd definitely consider getting the Yarn Poochy amiibo as well. We have a blue Yarn Yoshi and it feels like a cuddly toy. It'll be so nice to actually hold a "real" Yarn Poochy too! I wonder if Nintendo will consider releasing a range of Yarn enemies and Poochy Pups as well?
