LEGO Dimension (Wii U) Starter Pack

The kids have been deprived from video games during school days, so as soon as they were off, they jumped straight into the games they were playing in the previous holiday. Within 2 weeks however, they started requesting for new games!

Since they've both done really well at school, I guess they do deserve a treat. They have just finished LEGO City World (Wii U), so I thought I'll get them LEGO Dimensions, which we have always wanted since the release 2 years ago. We got it through LovetheSales.com, which is an online portal to the top 700 retailers' sales.

The price for LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack (Wii U) has dropped a lot since the release (we got it for £59.99), but I'm not sure if I'd be happy to pay any more than the current price because the kids completed the main story mode in about 12 hours of play, and they weren't very interested in the free world play.

I was hoping it'd last as long as it did with LEGO City World (the older version. Also came with free world play, but the story mode took them longer to complete) or even Skylanders (although they abandoned the game) for that price, before we need to start collecting the level packs. I suppose since it came with a box of LEGO (to build the portal), which I think would have costed around £17 to £24, the price kind of make sense. And to be fair, the 12 hours was really well spent because the kids really enjoyed the game, and I was impressed with the game designs and ideas too.

The LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack (Wii U) comes with the game, a box of LEGO to build the portal, and the platform for the LEGO Dimensions figures. We left the LEGO construction to Clay, which he really enjoyed doing, but he was a bit confused when the instruction booklet didn't include instructions for the LEGO Batmobile. It turned out that he would be told to build the LEGO Batmobile during the game play, with instructions shown on screen!

They also ended up needing to reconstruct part of the LEGO portal into something else during the game, and they kept going:" What?! That can't be! That's hilarious!" They absolutely loved the idea and thought it was genius combining LEGO play and game play like that.

Honestly speaking, the built LEGO portal wasn't really needed to play the game, but it allows the kids to relate to the game, for example when they acquire a piece of the portal in the game that they can attach physically on the actual LEGO portal.

Also, the platform isn't just for sending your character or special item into the game. Each part (there are 3) of the platform can light up in a different colour, which connects to the game play in the game. Say for example, when a character is being targeted with a special attack, players actually have the ability to rescue the character in the game by moving them physically away from the red light part of the platform to a white one. Or when they want to send a character through a pink portal inside the game, they just need to place the character on the part where it's lid up in pink.

The platform in LEGO Dimensions act more than the portal where it sends the figures into the game, and we are very impressed with the additional use.

The main story is brilliant with plenty of LEGO humour. We loved it when The LEGO Movie Batman met LEGO Batman, who could do all the tricks while The LEGO Movie Batman failed at them, just like in The LEGO Movie!

And like in The LEGO Movie, the characters travels through different LEGO world, but they changed the graphics accordingly as well, for example in Simpsons where everything is just like in the cartoon, and the arcade world is very pixelated.

There are plenty of clever puzzles for the kids to solve, although I don't think they are as complicated as in the other LEGO games as not once did the kids get stuck (that could be one reason why they completed the game so quickly!).

The most memorable part is definitely in Dr. Who's world, where ghastly angel statues changed positions every time the light flickered! And when the kids were too slow, a scary head shot of an angry angel flickers on the screen a few times (slow enough not to cause any health issues) before one of the character bursted into LEGO pieces. it was quite creepy but the kids couldn't stop giggling!

Overall, the kids really enjoyed the main game. Although it was a bit short, they laughed through it all. If I get some new characters, I wouldn't be surprised if they will use them to play the game again.

The great thing about LEGO Dimensions is that there are plenty of expansion packs you can connect to it. The ones we will be interested in are those that will add additional game levels to the game (although not in the same story), since the kids really like to play the story mode. The good thing is that there is plenty of choices out there now!

2 more weeks to go before school starts and we will definitely make the most of it!
